Barbell basics
What the bar specs mean
Diameter
28 mm bars (25 mm on 15 kg bars) are American Barbell's weightlifting and training diameter. 29 mm is its powerlifting diameter, with power bars built rigid for minimal flex under max loads.
Knurl and marks
Knurl marks show grip width: Olympic marks for weightlifting, powerlifting marks for the power lifts. American Barbell adds a center knurl to its power bars for stability. The Chewy bars use a more aggressive 20 teeth-per-inch knurl.
Sleeve rotation
American Barbell introduced composite bushings in Olympic bars in 1999 and uses them for smooth, quiet rotation in multi-lift bars. Its precision needle bearing bars are built for Olympic weightlifting, with a bearing system American Barbell says spins smoother as the load gets heavier.
Shaft finish
Hard chrome and Cerakote protect the steel with a coating, and Cerakote adds color. Stainless steel needs no coating: American Barbell notes it resists corrosion and can be cleaned without damaging the surface.
Dumbbell guide
How American Barbell dumbbells differ
The biggest differences are the head material (German urethane, urethane or rubber), the handle rating and how the handle joins the head. American Barbell points high-abuse commercial floors to the Series I, with its patented splined lock that tightens rather than loosens with use.
| Line | Head | Handle | Handle rating | Grip | Rated for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Series I urethaneSingles | German urethane, solid steel core | USA-made chrome, patented spline lock | 130,000 PSI | 32 / 35 mm | High-abuse commercial |
| Series IV urethaneSets of pairs | Textured urethane, solid steel core | Hard chrome, medium knurl | 90,000 PSI | 32 / 35 mm | Commercial |
| 10-sided urethaneSingles | 10-sided urethane, solid steel core | Hard chrome, medium knurl | 90,000 PSI | 32 / 35 / 38 mm | Gym, studio, home |

| Hex rubberSingles & sets | Low-odor rubber, hex | Chrome, fully knurled | — | 31 / 33 mm | Commercial & everyday |

| Series 5 fixed barbellStraight or EZ | Black rubber | High-tensile steel | 90,000 PSI | 32 mm | Light commercial |
Singles are priced per dumbbell or bar. Sets list the exact pairs or bars included. "Rated for" uses American Barbell's own wording where published.
Plate guide
Bumper plates or iron plates?
Bumper plates are 450 mm across, so the bar sits at the same height as a competition plate, and they're built for lifts that are dropped. At the same weight the urethane Pro Series plate is much thinner than a rubber Sport bumper, which leaves more room on the sleeve.
| Plate | Type | Material | Size | Thickness | Weights |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Urethane Pro Series bumperlb and kg | Bumper plate | German urethane | 450 mm · 140 mm hard chrome hub | 45 lb: 2.05 in | 10–55 lb; 5–25 kg |
| Sport bumperlb | Bumper plate | Rubber, stainless steel insert | 450 mm (IWF standard) | 45 lb: 2-7/8 in | 10–55 lb |
| VM TPU Olympic platelb | Iron plate (not a bumper) | Cast-iron core, TPU urethane cover | 6.25–17 in | 45 lb: 1.64 in | 2.5–45 lb |
American Barbell states its Olympic (non-bumper) plate lines are not designed or warranted for dropping.
